The love of his life will bring out his roar.

John Dallas has lots of money, but no real direction in his life. He cares for lions at a local petting zoo where people can pay to pet the cubs. He’s heard stories and read about shifters—creatures who can shift from an animal form into a human form. Seeing the lions makes him wonder if those lions can shift. When he witnesses an act of cruelty to the lions, he finds his purpose in life—to save the lions.

Markas knows he can shift, but hasn’t yet. He’s fascinated by John and wants to shift in order to get to know the human better. But lions don’t last at the petting zoo past their third birthday. Once he’s at the age of being moved, he’ll lose his chance with John. Will John accept him his his human form? He’s determined to shift and snag the man of his dreams.

What will happen when the shifter and the human are thrown together by fate? White hot sparks.

John’s breath clogged in his throat. He’d gotten three of the four lions out of the enclosure and into the adjacent farm, but Markas hadn’t made it past the hole in the metal fence. Fuck.
“Joe, I need your help. Now.” He didn’t wait for his brother to answer. “I’m getting the sheet and tossing him onto it. Not the best way to move a lion, but this one is a sweet boy, and he’s hurt. I can’t let the hunters have him.” Don’t let the bullet be in his chest or his head, he thought. Let them have hit him somewhere that’s not life-threatening.
“You tell me when to pull and I’ll do it.” Joe appeared at the hole. “I’ll keep watch.”
John scrambled around the cat, hefting the animal’s legs onto the sheet and then moving his upper body to the sheet as well. Gunfire rang out over his head, making him wince. He’d never been in combat and knew he wasn’t meant for a soldier’s life, but if he could save the beautiful animal, he’d take a few gunshots whizzing past his head.
Let’s just hope they don’t connect with me, too. “Pull. Joe, pull,” John shouted. With his brother’s help, John managed to get the cat to the hole in the fence.
“He’s heavy,” Joe groaned. “I’ve got him, but damn. What are you going to do with him? He’s been shot?”
“I know. I’ve got Willow Needs coming over. She’s a trained veterinarian.” John yanked one last time, getting the lion through the fence. Once they were all safe, he shoved the planks back into place. “There.” He turned his attention to Joe. “She’s been lobbying since high school to get this place shut down. She’s all onboard to help us.”
“Good,” Joe replied.
John checked the wound. Whoever had shot the cat had managed to hit the target but hadn’t buried the bullet deep. Still, the hole was high on the lion’s hip. They’d need to get him to the barn soon.
“I’ve got the others on the trailer. They went pretty easily.” Joe stood beside John. “Ready to put him in the truck?”
When John glanced up at his brother, Joe’s eyes were wide. “What?” John asked.
Joe opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before he spoke. “I don’t think we’ll need the trailer for him.”
John looked back at the covered-up hole. No one was trying to get through. “What is your problem?”
“Your lion is a guy.”
“What?” John stared at his brother. “Did you get hit on the head? He’s a lion.”
“Look.” Joe pointed to the big cat, except the cat wasn’t one any longer. Joe was right. A man lay crumpled against John’s hip.
John met his brother’s confused gaze. He had plenty of his own questions. Some of the lions at the petting zoo really were shifters. Dear God, they’d been bred so many times. It was possible some used for the canned hunts could’ve been shifters, too.
His stomach lurched.

“I’ve never seen one in person, but we’ve got a shifter.”

THE END! My Job Here is Done – NOT!

by Nancy Gideon

That last word of your last paragraph of your last page in your last chapter. Miller time, right? I wish! (Well, maybe one!) We writers know reaching the end of that first draft is only the FIRST step. Then your manuscript is off to charm school (or boot camp!) to make it presentable for the public. A nip here, a tuck there, smoothing this, accentuating that, a little more of this here, a lot less of that there, a pleasing introduction, a glossy first impression . . . and sometimes you don’t recognize that raw, vibrant piece of fiction you poured your heart and soul into in the finished product that’s presented to the masses. We’d like to think of ourselves as suave Henry Higgins crafting a ragged waif into an elegant Eliza Doolittle, but usually we feel more like this:

I just wrote the end. The hard part is stepping away to let it rest. Like a soufflé or a cake, if you don’t leave it alone, all the air goes out of it and it’s ruined by TOO much attention. So I’m writing blog posts and cleaning my office and maybe I’ll even binge through Season 5 of Supernatural. Then I’ll come back to my project after it’s cooled and be able to regard it with objective eyes before I begin to pare away words I love and scenes that made me cry in the name of a more solid total effort. (Heroic self-sacrificing sigh!) Then my push will shift toward promotion and the busyness of getting it out there, and I’ll long for those days of just slapping down words in a sloppy base coat of creative energy. A writer’s job is never done . . . but there’s always the lure of that next book waiting.

UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS is the 10th book in my “By Moonlight” dark paranormal shape-shifter series. It’s gestated almost as long as one of my sons, and Monday labor will begin. After bearing down, sweating and swearing, I’m hoping for a Christening sometime in late August/early September. Here’s a sneak peek . . .
He feared no man, no foe, no obstacle or challenge. He’d learned to stand his ground and take it without a wince while growing up with the most to prove in the House of Terriot. He’d been schooled beneath the heavy heel and meaty fists of Bram Terriot, bearing the marks of those lessons scored into his skin and once tender psyche. He understood intimidation better than he did compassion. Had once indulged in every savagery Lee now expected from him. Would have become a brutal, heartless monster walking the same path his father followed had it not been for the two things that called to his latent decency: The brothers who’d fearlessly stood beside him and the female brave enough to believe his claims.

He owed them. He owed his family prosperous lives without fear and subjugation, where pride wasn’t measured in cruelties. He owed the woman he loved the fulfillment of promises made by a starry-eyed boy. He owed them a future in which they bowed to no one and had no reason to expect the worse from one another. And to achieve those things, all he had to do was right the wrongs of the man who’d desecrated the crown he now represented.

All . . .

With a weary laugh, Cale closed his eyes.

His debt. His burden. His to carry and complete alone. No whining about the costs to body, heart or soul. No crying over what couldn’t be changed, repaid or repaired. No shirking from sacrifices sure to cost more than he’d ever thought to wager. The blood on his hands would never come clean. There was no forgiveness for his sins—the sins of the father now those of the son. He was lost but he wouldn’t drag those he loved and respected down with him. Not while he still had strength and breath and opportunity.

He couldn’t save his people hiding on their mountain top. He couldn’t purge his guilt without a willingness to surrender his life.

And he couldn’t protect his mate if he couldn’t provide her with his heir.

Friday Night Science Fiction

Wow. Just as the major TV stations go into summer reruns, the Syfy channel takes over Friday night.

First up, “Defiance” is back for the third season. The two hour season premiere brought more violence and another set of aliens in and around post-apocalypse St. Louis, named Defiance. Since my mom was from St. Louis and I still have family there, I started watching two years ago. I liked the premise of an older human man protecting a young alien girl in a wild-west type town. Then things got weird last season with a “demon child” inhabiting the young girl and getting her to murder a whole lot of people. Even though the demon is gone, people in Defiance don’t much care for the girl. Imagine that. As it says on syfy.com, new villains, new aliens, new threats.

Next is “Dark Matter.” Get set for an adventure with six people (2 women, 4 men) who woke up from stasis on a starship with no memory of who they are or their mission. As if that wasn’t enough, when they explore the ship, they’re attacked by an android who then figured out their destination. The characters name themselves after the order in which they awoke. If you’ve read any of my books, you know I love adventure, especially with some humor. Character Five (Anthony Lemke, Whitehouse Down) brings comic relief to intense situations. The creators of this new series created all the Stargate series, so this ought to be good. Questions abound. What happens when they find out who they are? Are they the good guys or bad?

Next Friday, another new series starts. “Killjoys” is an adventure show about a trio of intergalactic bounty hunters. None of them sounds like Stephanie Plum. LOL One of the characters is played by Aaron Ashmore who played Jinks on “Warehouse 13” (one of my favorite series) and appeared in “Murdock Mysteries” (another favorite). Luke Mcfarlane (from “Brothers and Sisters”) and Hannah John-Kamen round out the cast. From the cast descriptions, this sounds like it will be a fun adventure.

It looks like Syfy is on a roll. My DVR is set so I don’t miss any of these shows.

What shows will you watch this summer?

Diane Burton writes romantic suspense combined with action/adventure, either here on Earth or in space. Her newest book THE PROTECTOR, an Outer Rim novel, will be released this summer.

Wherever I go -

There I am.

I’m sure every author has written a story which takes place somewhere they’ve visited—or in their own hometowns! I have. Many places I’ve lived over the years have become locales for books I write and how excited was I when I found this map thingy on Pinterest where I could keep track of the places I’ve lived or traveled to, and where I’ve planted quite a few stories and characters? Let’s just say I was like a kid in a candy store!

Aldan “Ace” Spade from Ace of Spades owns a fictional club in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Omen’s, the club for monsters from the newly boxed set, Thirst, is hidden somewhere in a dark alley in Philadelphia. If you find the entrance, Satan’s son, Peris, might serve you, but trust me, you’ll serve Nolan in any way he wants you to!
Grind, an interracial M/M story written in honor of Loving Day which is June 12, is available for preorder. It’s set in Vegas where everyone can’t wait to get home from to tell you what should have stayed in Vegas! I’ve visited there often and I simply love the place. See what Nightshade Collection authors are up to HERE.

Just signed a contract for the 4th story in the Dirty Rotten Vampire series, Dare Me Once, and it will give you a completely new perspective of Big Bear Mountain in California. When, if ever, was the last time a volcano erupted in southern California? Ahh, the things these dirty, rotten vampires get up to!

Today, Driver - Phantom Lure 1, a bisexual paranormal, releases at Changeling Press and it’s situated in Philadelphia. The characters even have dinner in a restaurant I've eaten in often with my sister and my niece in the University City area, and they catch a movie next door afterward just as we did. Here’s a bit:

He drives when the need arises; it's a ride Grange Stafford looks forward to, one that sustains his life force -- a ride that will end fulfilling every imagined carnal yearning.

The handsome man driving the bus on Roman Curt's route to work appears in an unrealized fantasy. What would his girlfriend think of his wanton desires? Roman envisions sharing more than her with the stranger whose intent green eyes observe him through the rear view mirror. Roman wants to be his lover too!

Bus driver, take me your way.

Read more HERE and HERE.

I could go on, and on. Suffice it to say, if I have lived there, drove through and loved the ambiance, your hometown could possibly be the location or home of one of my deadly creatures of the night!

Eight Ways to Determine if you're a Paranormal Romantic Reader (or Writer)

You may be a Paranormal Romantic Reader (or Writer) if...
by Maureen L. Bonatch

  1. You've got a thing for book boyfriends with wings, fangs, fur or other out of the ordinary attributes
  2. You're pretty sure the two guys with mullets aren't stuck in 80's fashion--they're time-travelers
  3. You aren't worried about snakes and other critters lurking on the other side of that abandoned bridge, you're more concerned that no one else has wanted to visit the secret village hidden there
  4.  You fantasize about what kind of spell you'd stir first...if you ever gain the powers you're certain were denied to you at birth
  5. You hope the poltergeist hiding things in your house is friendly---because you certainly didn't lose those items
  6. You don't ever think of anyone as weird or odd---only harboring character traits ripe for harvest
  7. You like men who can sweep you off your feet. Literally...with their supernatural strength, magic or wings.
  8. You tense when you open a dark room in the basement, waiting for a creature to burst from it's hiding place you've disturbed. Every. Single. Time. (okay, maybe that's just me)

One thing for sure, your world will never be ordinary when your mind dwells in the extraordinary.

Tell me what makes you think you're a reader and/or writer of the paranormal?

Make the ordinary extraordinary and laugh all the way.
